Works in the technique of waffle ( franc. gaufrage) are a particularly interesting example in Antoni Starczewski's graphic work. As Sebastian Dudzik notes, in waffrage the artist combined the experience of printmaking and sculpture and their three-dimensionality gave the works the character of objects, which was a novelty in Poland (Kowalewska A., Musiał G., Antoni Starczewski. Transpositions, published by the Central Museum of Textiles in Lodz, Lodz 2020, p. 136). Such an innovative approach to printmaking, eliminating its previous limitations, brought it closer to other media. Examples of such a rapprochement within Starczewski's work are the tapestries housed in the Central Textile Museum in Łódź and the ceramic works, which were based on the earlier graphics (Kowalewska A., Musiał G., op. cit., p. 137). Attempts to translate the content into different matter cause the compositions to change under the influence of the matter itself (paper, fabric, clay) as well as under the limitations dictated by the technique.
