The offered painting First cold from 2018 belongs to a series of large-format painting works in which Agata Kus uses collage-like juxtapositions of seemingly unrelated situations. Single motifs juxtaposed side by side seem to be irregular fragments cut rather hastily from photographs. Formally these works are not collages although the artist's intention is for the viewer to interpret the individual scenes as cut out alive from reality. They differ in scale and perspective, a monochromatic fragment is juxtaposed with a multicolored one. The conglomeration of seemingly unconnected stories creates a completely new narrative. As art critic Anna Kowalska notes in an essay on Agata Kus's work, the result of such action becomes a subtle, not always intended content. Despite her natural inclination to use the language of realism and her weakness for classically conceived beauty, Kus finds it attractive to unmask the medium by preserving the traces of tape or pencil and their physical, material properties (Kowalska A., Unquestionable impression of anxiety, www.secondaryarchive.org, accessed 10.11.2025)
